The more powerful Legacy 3.6R is only available in Limited trim.

A couple of years ago, a new gray interior color debut, joining black and ivory. New exterior colors include Crimson Red Pearl and Magnetite Gray.

Exterior Features
Look closely and you'll be able to spot the minor styling changes that accompany the Legacy into 2018 continuing through 2020. Up front, the bumper, grille, and headlights are new, while around back the bumper, taillights, and exhaust outlet are revised.

Subaru says that unique wheel designs are on deck , along with standard welcome lighting and reshaped side mirrors, which on upper trim levels include LED turn signal indicators.

Interior Features
Subaru says it has taken several steps to make the Legacy's interior quieter, and the cabin benefits from improved materials, revised trim and accents, upscale detailing, rearranged center console, and a new steering wheel.

Under the Hood
Subaru makes no changes to the Legacy's engines, but does tweak and tune the car's transmission, steering, suspension, and brakes.

The Legacy 2.5i is equipped with a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine generating 175 horsepower and 174 lb.-ft. of torque. Step up to the Legacy 3.6R for a 3.6-liter 6-cylinder engine making 256 horsepower and 247 lb.-ft. of torque. Both engines are paired with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) and a standard all-wheel-drive system with active torque vectoring.

The CVT features a manual shift mode and paddle shifters to deliver quicker response to driver input as well as smoother acceleration, according to Subaru. An incline start-assist system is standard for, along with Subaru's hill-holder system.

In other news, the Legacy's suspension is said to reduce body roll while adding more ride compliance. Subaru claims the electric steering is revised for more linear response, and that the brake pedal is firmer and more direct in terms of engagement.

Safety
Already known to be a safe family sedan, the Legacy has several improvements that help to improve the car's safety. All Legacy sedans get new predictive guide lines for the standard reversing camera, a tire-pressure monitor that measures pressure at all four wheels, and upgraded LATCH anchors that Subaru says make it easier to install a child safety seat.

New safety options include rear automatic emergency braking, steering-responsive LED headlights, and automatic high-beam headlights that are regulated by the optional EyeSight system's camera. Subaru also upgrades the available blind-spot detection and rear cross-traffic alert system this year.

Technology
The latest versions of Subaru's Starlink infotainment systems debut in the 2018 Legacy and continues now in 2020. They boast faster start-up and response time, smartphone-projection technology supporting Apple and Android devices, improved voice recognition, and the ability to update the technology via Wi-Fi.

The standard version of Starlink features a 6.5-in. display screen. The upgrade version has an 8-in. display screen, a new Tom Tom navigation system, and an expanded menu of Starlink applications. New apps include Yelp, Glympse, and Best Parking. A Magellan navigation app is also available, as well as eBird (for local bird sightings and locations). A Right Track app monitors your driving habits and recommends improvements.
