Schaller Autoworld participates in Financial Reality Fair for Over 400 Students From Area High Schools

Achieve Financial Credit Union was proud to help sponsor and organize a financial literacy simulation for high schools students. Students from sixteen high schools, including Avon, Berlin, New Britain, Plainville, Southington, and Wethersfield High, participated in an exercise intended to prepare them for some of the real life decisions they will be making when they complete their education and live on their own for the first time.

To prepare for the event, students selected a career, researched the starting salary for their selected careers, and forwarded this information to Fair organizers.  The career and salary were used to create an individual budget worksheet which included line items for all of the monthly expenses and one time expenses the students would expect to encounter when living on their own.

Each student was assigned a student loan payment appropriate for the selected career, a savings account and a checking account with modest balances, a credit card with a credit limit and a balance, and a randomly assigned credit score.  Students were then directed to visit over 40 booths set up in CCSU's Alumni Hall to purchase required goods and services such as housing, transportation, food, clothing, and insurance, as well as other optional services such as electronics, pets, and entertainment.  Their goal was to purchase everything they needed while staying within their budget for one month.   Students were then required to meet with a Financial Counselor to calculate their expenses, discuss their decisions, and strategies for credit and savings management.

This event highlights the commitment of your Credit Union to develop financial literacy in our students before they have to make real choices that impact them for the rest of their lives.

Automaker Report Cards: Honda and Subaru Lead

Release Date: 02/23/2010

Automaker Report Cards: Honda and Subaru Lead, Hyundai Makes Strides, Chrysler Lags

CR APR 10 Cover YONKERS, NY - Honda and Subaru have earned class leader status for building the best all-around vehicles for American drivers, according to the Automaker Report Cards published in Consumer Reports' 2010 Annual Auto Issue. This is the fourth consecutive year that Honda has topped CR's list. At the opposite end of the annual ranking is Chrysler, which fared even worse than last year. However, Chrysler had one recommended vehicle this year, the Ram pickup, compared to no recommended vehicles last year.

Tied with an overall score of 77 out of 100 points, Honda and Subaru were followed by Toyota (74) (Recommendations for eight recalled Toyota models were temporarily suspended), Hyundai (73) and Nissan and Volkswagen tied at (72) in overall score.

Although the best vehicles overall are being built by Honda and Subaru, South Korean carmaker Hyundai, and its subsidiary, Kia, has shown the most dramatic improvement, jumping to fourth place from ninth last year.

The full report, "Rating the carmakers" is in the Annual Auto Issue, which goes on sale March 2. It is also available to subscribers at www.ConsumerReports.org

The overall score for each automaker is based on the average of its vehicles' overall scores in Consumer Reports' road tests and their average predicted-reliability ratings from Consumer Reports' Annual Auto Survey.  Manufacturers received a report card only if five or more of their vehicles were tested.

Honda continues to make many of the best all-around vehicles. Overall, its Honda and Acura models, are the most reliable vehicles in CR's predicted-reliability ratings. The most recent models from Honda, however, have not shown the same dedication to interior quality and fuel economy that earlier models did. Despite its outstanding reliability, CR doesn't recommend the new Insight because of subpar emergency handling and a compromised rear seat.

The redesigned 2010 Legacy sedan and Outback wagon raised Subaru's overall test score from 78 points to 81. That helped contribute to its tie with Honda in CR's rankings. However, Consumer Reports no longer recommends the Subaru Impreza WRX because its subscribers reported a relatively high number of problems, including transmission troubles, in the latest survey. Last year, CR recommended every Subaru model.

Hyundai/Kia showed a dramatic improvement in CR's report-card rankings, led by newer models such as the Hyundai Genesis and Elantra sedans, Santa Fe SUV, and Kia Optima sedan. Their reliability continues to improve with only the Kia Sedona minivan below average.

Not all Asian models are reliable or good performers. Although many models from Honda, Toyota, and Mitsubishi are very reliable, several scored too low in CR's tests to be Recommended. Toyota recently issued safety recalls and temporarily stopped sales of eight models because of rare occurrences of a sticking accelerator pedal. Consumer Reports has suspended its recommendations of those models, which caused Toyota's percentage of recommended vehicles to drop off by almost half.

The past year was especially rough for American automakers but there is some good news: reliability of some Ford models now rivals their competitors from Honda and Toyota. But in CR's testing, Ford vehicles were not always among the best performers. Although the Flex and Fusion scored highly, most models from Ford, Mercury, and Lincoln rate only midpack. Still, the freshened Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan are excellent overall packages that provide good performance and fuel economy. Consumer Reports recommends 75 percent of the Ford models that were tested, up from 70 percent last year.

New models from GM now rank among the best in CR's testing, although overall reliability, even among some of the new models, still lags behind most of the competition. GM models that score well in CR's tests include the Buick Enclave and LaCrosse, Cadillac CTS, Chevrolet Corvette, Equinox, Malibu, and Traverse, and GMC Acadia.

Chrysler's grades fell to the bottom of the class, and it is the only automaker to drop from last year in all measures. Most models from the manufacturer have noisy, inefficient, unrefined powertrains; subpar interiors; and poor visibility. The Ram 1500 pickup is the only Chrysler model on Consumer Reports' Recommended list.

If all that consumers cared about were performance, comfort, and safety, Mercedes and Volkswagen (including Audi) models would go to the head of the class. They have the highest average test scores because they ride and handle especially well, have comfortable seats, and have relatively good fuel economy and acceleration. In recent years those vehicles have lagged in reliability. But that has begun to change, with several models from Mercedes and Volkswagen, as well as BMW, Saab, and Volvo, attaining average or better predicted reliability.

The best vehicles often set the standard for their competitors to follow or improve upon. In the end, it's the consumer who ends up the ultimate winner.

Subaru Recognized as the Only Manufacturer with All Vehicles Rated a TOP SAFETY PICK

Subaru Recognized as the Only Manufacturer with All Vehicles Rated a TOP SAFETY PICK by the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety

Cherry Hill, N.J., November 18, 2009 - Subaru of America, Inc. today announced that it has been recognized as the only manufacturer with all vehicles named a TOP SAFETY PICK by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

"We are extremely pleased to be the only manufacturer with all vehicles named a TOP SAFETY PICK. This is an outstanding success and a tribute to the engineering that goes into Subaru products," said Tom Doll, executive vice president and COO, Subaru of America, Inc. "To have this recognition by the IIHS reinforces to our customers that we maintain the highest standards when producing vehicles that are safe, durable, reliable as well as fun-to-drive."

"Subaru is the only manufacturer with a TOP SAFETY PICK winner in every vehicle class in which it competes," said IIHS president Adrian Lund. "The vehicles that earn this designation are the cream of the crop for protecting people in the most common kinds of crashes, and they have electronic stability control for helping drivers stay out of many crashes altogether."

The TOP SAFETY PICK recognizes vehicles that do the best job of protecting people in front, side, rear, and now rollover crashes based on 'good' ratings, which denotes 'good' as the top ranking status possible in Institute tests. Winners also must have electronic stability control.

About IIHS The Institute's frontal crashworthiness evaluations are based on results of 40 mph frontal offset crash tests. Each vehicle's overall evaluation is based on measurements of intrusion into the occupant compartment, injury measures recorded on a Hybrid III dummy in the driver seat, and analysis of slow-motion film to assess how well the restraint system controlled dummy movement during the test. Side evaluations are based on performance in a crash test in which the side of a vehicle is struck by a barrier moving at 31 mph. The barrier represents the front end of a pickup or SUV. Ratings reflect injury measures recorded on 2 instrumented SID-IIs dummies representing a 5th percentile woman, assessment of head protection countermeasures, and the vehicle's structural performance during the impact.

Rear crash protection is rated according to a two-step procedure. Starting points for the ratings are measurements of head restraint geometry - the height of a restraint and its horizontal distance behind the back of the head of an average size man. Seat/head restraints with good or acceptable geometry are tested dynamically using a dummy that measures forces on the neck. This test simulates a collision in which a stationary vehicle is struck in the rear at 20 mph. Seats without good or acceptable geometry are rated poor overall because they can't be positioned to protect many people.

In the roof strength test, a metal plate is pushed against 1 side of a roof at a constant speed. To earn a good rating for rollover protection, the roof must withstand a force of 4 times the vehicle's weight before reaching 5 inches of crush. This is called a strength-to-weight ratio. For an acceptable rating, the minimum required strength-to-weight ratio is 3.25. A marginal rating value is 2.5. Anything lower than that is rated poor.

Subaru of America, Inc. Continues to Break Sales Records -- Company Announces a Record Month for 2010 Outback and Legacy Models --  -- January Sales Show a 28-percent Increase --

Cherry Hill, N.J., February 2, 2010 - Subaru of America, Inc., coming off a record-breaking sales year as the top performing brand in 2009, today announced a 28-percent sales increase over January 2009. The company sold 15,611 units in January 2010 versus 12,194 units sold in January 2009.   The newly introduced models continue selling at a record pace. The 2010 Subaru Outback and Legacy vehicles posted their best January sales records ever. By selling 5,467 units, the 2010 Subaru Outback more than doubled its January sales with a 117-percent increase over 2009. The 2010 Subaru Legacy sold 2,448 units, which also doubled its previous January sales, at 110-percent over 2009.  "In January we were able to continue our sales momentum thanks to strong product offerings, consistency in marketing and the hard work of our great dealer body," said Tim Colbeck, senior vice president of sales for Subaru of America. By providing customers with vehicles that represent a long-term value, Subaru continues to outperform the industry."

Subaru First Automaker with two consecutive MOTOR TREND Sport/Utility of the Year Title

Subaru Outback Named MOTOR TREND's 2010 Sport/Utility of the Year. -- Subaru First Automaker with two consecutive MOTOR TREND Sport/Utility of the Year Titles --

Cherry Hill, N.J., October 15, 2009 - Subaru of America, Inc. today announced that the Subaru Outback has been named MOTOR TREND's 2010 Sport/Utility of the Year. The Subaru Outback's victory follows the Subaru Forester's win for the 2009 award, making Subaru the first automaker to win two consecutive MOTOR TREND Sport/Utility of the Year awards.

MOTOR TREND editor-in-chief, Angus MacKenzie, said, "The 2010 Subaru Outback offers a unique combination of comfort, efficiency, versatility and value. It boasts car-like refinement, drivability and gas mileage on the road, yet is as capable in the rough stuff as all but the most off-road focused sport utilities. Thoughtfully engineered, cleverly detailed and competitively priced, the Subaru Outback is a terrific all-rounder with broad appeal."

"We are doubly proud and honored to receive the MOTOR TREND 2010 Sport/Utility of the Year award for the second consecutive year," said Thomas J. Doll, executive vice president and chief operating officer, Subaru of America Inc. "To win the 2009 award for the Forester was wonderful enough, but to have won for the 2010 Outback this year is truly an outstanding achievement.  The Subaru Outback is an icon of performance and capability and was the original SUV alternative. Now with its improved power, economy and increased dimensions it is he complete package."

Speaking to Subaru of America's sales success as the top performing automaker of 2009, Doll noted, "The success of our business is founded not only on our outstanding products, but also on the commitment and dedication of our retail sales network and great sales and marketing programs.  We are absolutely thrilled that MOTOR TREND has added their validation to the Subaru brand." Priced from $22,995, and produced at Subaru's zero-landfill plant in Lafayette, Indiana, the all-new Subaru Outback is available with either a 170-hp 2.5-liter four cylinder boxer engine or a 256-hp 3.6-liter six-cylinder boxer engine.  The 2010 Outback is built on an all-new platform featuring a 2.8-inch longer wheelbase (now 107.9 inches) that improves ride and interior space, especially rear seat legroom. The 2010 Outback also features increased hip and shoulder room.

Living up to Subaru's legendary safety record, the Outback offers cutting-edge safety technology, including Subaru's ring reinforcement safety system, front, seat-mounted side, and side-curtain airbags and ABS. Subaru Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC) system, which incorporates stability and traction control systems with a roll-over sensor, is also standard equipment.

The Subaru Outback was recently named a Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS).

To judge contenders for the award, MOTOR TREND's editorial staff conducted an exhaustive three-phase testing process. Phase one of the process includes a full tech check and weigh-in, then full track testing to establish baseline data for acceleration, braking, and handling. Phase two involves three days of road loops offering a range of road surfaces and traffic conditions to evaluate ride and handling, engine and transmission smoothness and responsiveness, wind and road noise, and ergonomics. A dirt-track section tests traction, stability, and braking control systems. In phase three the judges debate and deliberate. This year, the editors updated and expanded the judging criteria to six new categories:  Design Advancement - well-executed exterior and interior styling; innovative vehicle packaging; good selection and use of materials.  Engineering Excellence - total vehicle concept and execution; clever solutions to packaging, manufacturing and dynamics issues; cost-effective tech that benefits the consumer.   Intended Function - how well the vehicle does the job its planners, designers, and engineers intended it to do.  Efficiency - low fuel consumption and carbon footprint, relative to the vehicle's competitive set.  Safety - a vehicle's ability to help the driver avoid a crash, as well as the secondary safety measures that protect its occupants from harm during a crash.  Value - competitive price and equipment levels, measured against those of vehicles in the same market segment.

MOTOR TREND's Sport/Utility of the Year is not a comparison test and is only open to all-new or substantially upgraded vehicles that have gone on sale in the 12 months from November 1 of the previous year.  MOTOR TREND looks for the pick of each year's crop of new SUV's, and does not revisit vehicles that have been on sale for the past few years.

The Subaru Clean Plant

Here's something to think about: next time you take out your trash at home for collection, you're sending more trash to landfills than the entire Subaru manufacturing plant in Lafayette, Indiana (SIA) does in a year. The Subaru plant was the first auto assembly plant to achieve zero landfill status - nothing from its manufacturing efforts goes into a landfill. It's all reused and recycled. Each year, SIA actively recycles 99.3% of excess/leftover steel, plastic, wood, paper, glass, and other materials. The remaining 0.7% is shipped to the city of Indianapolis and incinerated to help generate steam. In 2006, SIA recycled 11,411 tons of scrap steel, 1,537 tons of cardboard and paper, and 963 tons of wood. That's equal to conserving 31,040 mature trees, 31,572 cubic yards of landfill space, 711,631 gallons of oil, and 10,759,000 gallons of water.

But SIA is no stranger to being a trailblazer when it comes to being environmentally responsible.

  • In 1994, SIA was also the first auto assembly plant in the U.S. to be smoke free.
  • In 1998, SIA was the first auto assembly plant in the U.S. to be ISO 14001 Certified.
  • In 2002, SIA became the first auto assembly plant in the U.S. with an on-site solvent recovery system that produces dry still bottoms.
  • In 2003, SIA became the first U.S. automotive assembly plant to be designated a wildlife habitat. Deer, coyotes, beavers, blue herons, geese, and other animals live there in peaceful coexistence with the Subaru plant. It's our commitment to leave as small a footprint as possible, delivering real-world benefits that everyone can enjoy.
  • In 2004, SIA became the first U.S. manufacturing facility to reach zero landfill status.
  • In 2006, SIA was awarded the U.S. EPA's Gold Achievement Award as a top achiever in the agency's WasteWise program to reduce waste and improve recycling.

Green Supplier

To build a green machine, you have to start green. See how we've set and achieved environmental stewardship goals for manufacturing at our Subaru of Indiana plant.

Wildlife Habitat

In 2003, Subaru of Indiana Automotive, Inc. became the first automotive assembly plant to be designated as a Backyard Wildlife Habitat by the National Wildlife Federation. SIA's 800+ acres serves as a home for various wildlife including: white-tail deer, rabbits, Canadian Geese, Mallard Ducks, squirrels, beavers, coyote, snapping turtles, frogs, red-tail hawks, blue heron, and the Bald Eagle.

Partial Zero Emissions Vehicles

Subaru offers the most fuel efficient All-Wheel Drive vehicle lineup in America. Since 2003, Subaru has offered Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle (PZEV) certified Legacy, Outback, and Forester models for sale anywhere in the U.S. Subaru PZEV vehicles meet California?s Super-Ultra-Low-Emission Vehicle exhaust emission standard. Gasoline vehicles meeting PZEV emissions standards can have even lower emissions than hybrid or alternative fuel vehicles. Subaru PZEV vehicles are also U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Certified SmartWay Vehicles and are honored in the EPA?s Green Vehicle Guide located at http://www.epa.gov/emissweb.

Zero Landfill

In 2004, Subaru of Indiana Automotive, Inc. became the first automotive assembly plant to be 'Zero-Landfill'. SIA achieved this outstanding accomplishment in May of 2004 and has remained zero landfill. SIA sends nothing from its manufacturing process to the landfill. In other words, a typical household puts more trash in the ground than SIA's entire manufacturing facility.

Motor Trend named the Subaru Forester its 2009 Sport/Utility of the Year

We're excited to announce that Motor Trend named the Subaru Forester its 2009 Sport/Utility of the YearTM because it does all the things that matter most in an SUV, incredibly well. We built Forester with uncompromising safety, go-anywhere capability and lasting durability, so when it came to making a choice out of an exceptional field, the Forester stood out.

After experiencing its road-gripping Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, Motor Trend said "when it gets on dirt, it almost encourages you to go faster." The judges also noted that Forester had "the best observed fuel economy for an all-wheel drive SUV in this year's competition." After all, there's no point in having go-anywhere capability if you can't afford to get where you're going.

We'll take being called "green as you-know-what" as a compliment, and it tends to happen when all of your cars are built in a zero landfill plant. Forester is also the most affordable SUV in its class, so you can see why Motor Trend said "the traditional model for a SUV has changed into something smaller, more fuel-efficient, greener, more, well...Forester-y."

It's a good feeling when you're rewarded for doing things the right way, and we're proud to have built a responsible, versatile, right-sized utility vehicle. So when Motor Trend called Forester "the right vehicle for the times", it wasn't just for today but also for tomorrow. We want to continue building cars that enhance whatever you're doing. Whether it's a trip to the market, or a trip to the mountains. It's what we've always done, and what we will continue to do.

Annual Residual Value Awards | Schaller Subaru

ALG Newsroom

12/2/2009

ALG Announces 11th Annual Residual Value Awards

Santa Barbara, CA, December 2, 2009 -ALG, a subsidiary of DealerTrack Holdings, Inc. (Nasdaq: TRAK) and the industry benchmark for residual values and depreciation data, today announced its 11th annual Residual Value Awards, honoring the vehicles in each segment that are predicted to retain the highest percentage of their original price after a conventional three-year period.

This year's awards are based on 2010 model year vehicles.  For the eighth year, ALG has also included awards for the brands with the highest overall predicted resale values among all mainstream and all luxury vehicles.  The awards are derived after careful study of segment competition, historical vehicle performance and industry trends.  The list of winners can be found on www.alg.com.

Subaru of America has won the Mainstream Brand Residual Value Award for the first time, jumping over perennially strong Honda.  Subaru also received individual segment awards for the Forester in the Compact Utility Vehicle category and the Outback in the Midsize Utility Vehicle category.

"Subaru combines distinct product attributes, such as standard all-wheel drive and the wide use of turbo charged boxer engines, with a rugged but practical brand positioning to generate fierce loyalty among its buyers," said James Clark, General Manager of ALG.  "Subaru also has been restrained with incentives over the past year, and its three core models have all been recently redesigned, helping it to move from second place to first this year."

Acura, a division of American Honda Motor Company, has won the Luxury Brand Residual Value Award for the second consecutive year.

Mr. Clark commented, "Acura has taken a different tack than most luxury brands , and its decision to stick with front-wheel drive platforms and smaller engines has served it well in the current uncertain times.  Acura's outstanding reliability, simple packaging schemes and value pricing with low incentive levels were major factors in its repeat finish at the top of the luxury market this year."

Honda, the runner-up for the Mainstream Brand Residual Value Award, received three segment Residual Value Awards, for the Fit (Entry Compact Car); the Accord (Midsize Car); and the Odyssey (Minivan).

Mr. Clark concluded, "We continue to believe that residual value is the best metric for evaluating the overall strength of an automotive brand, and we congratulate all of the 2010 winners for their successful products and marketing strategies."
