Subaru Ventures Into Rear-Wheel Drive with the BRZ

Here in Connecticut, a lot of people stop into Schaller Subaru looking for a sturdy all-wheel-drive car that will get them through some of the tougher New England winters. In fact, we know many drivers who won't drive anything other than a Subaru because of its famous all-wheel drive system. So it came as a bit of a surprise when Subaru announced that the all-new 2013 BRZ would come standard with rear-wheel drive.
So what's the deal? Well, Nick Senior, Managing Director of Subaru Australia, says it was a bit of a struggle when they were deciding whether or not to bring the RWD Subie to Australia. As it is, Subaru is headlined by their "All 4 The Driver" campaign in Australia, and a car without all-wheel drive just doesn't really fit that model. Though he says the BRZ won them over because it has "the comfort...[of] a Subaru and [embodies] a true spirit of a Subaru - that it is a driver's car and is fun to drive."1 Also, the rear-wheel drive gives it a sporty experience, and "If [the BRZ] was ever a front-wheel drive, then no, that's an easy decision to make."2
The 2013 BRZ has consistently won critics over, and Schaller Subaru, for one, simply can't wait to try it out when it arrives at our showroom at 34 Frontage Rd Berlin, CT 06037. Though, it still does beg the question of why Subaru opted for rear-wheel drive. The answer, simply put, is that this vehicle was a joint effort between Subaru and Toyota. At the heart of the BRZ is the iconic flat-four boxer engine from Subaru. But the lightweight and high-performance sports car took on characteristics of a Toyota, and a rear-wheel drive platform was the best fit for this particular vehicle.
